So, you have a few weeks or months off during summer. And you wonder what to do with all this free time. Yes, you could go to the beach, hang out with your friends, work in a local café. Or binge-watch your favorite series, explore your city or the world during a vacation… But is that all there is? Are there no better ways of spending your summer in a more meaningful ways? Of COURSE there are - summer missions!
Why doing summer missions abroad is a great idea
As most high schools and universities offer long summer breaks (some universities offer even three months off during summer!), summer time is the perfect moment to go abroad. You dive into a new culture and meet people from all over the world. Besides you get to explore a new country and learn to be more independent. Indeed, you will grow as a person, but more importantly: you can grow in your relationship with God. And if you would like to learn how to share God’s love with people from all over the world, it is a great idea to join a summer missions team. Through summer missions or volunteer mission trips you learn how to share your faith with the people that you meet and how to make sharing the gospel part of your daily life. The summer missions that you do will become an experience of a lifetime, something you will never forget.
Wouldn’t it be better to look for summer volunteer programs near me?
No. Period. Go. Abroad. Imagine you are done with school or university and you have a job, a car, a partner, a dog or a goldfish. Going abroad for longer than a few weeks will become so much harder! You can spend the rest of your life volunteering in places near you. Use the opportunity of long summers off to broaden your horizon, step out of your comfort zone and serve in a different country while you still can! Moreover, in a different cultural setting it is easier to step out and do new things. There is a lower barrier to approach to someone and start a conversation from a completely different perspective. If you are looking for opportunities to grow in evangelism, summer missions are your way to go!
But what if I don’t have the money to go on summer mission trips?
So, you really want to consider going on summer mission trips, but you worry that you don’t have enough money. Money can be an issue that holds you back, especially when you are still in school. And it is true: there are lots of expensive summer mission trips. But they don’t necessarily need to be expensive. There are plenty of cheap summer mission trips out there (for example: doing summer mission trips with us only costs you €60 per month - accommodation, meals and training included!). Besides that, you could consider asking your church for support. Especially when you are doing summer missions, your church might be willing to help you out and cover up for all your expenses. If you really feel like God is calling you for summer missions during your school break, don’t let money holding you back.
Summer mission trips Amsterdam
Every year we offer a few positions in our summer volunteer program for young Christians (age 18 to 30). Our summer volunteer program is created for people who want to volunteer abroad in the summertime and share God's love in an international setting. Summer (June, July and August) are high season in our Christian hostels – the Shelter – in Amsterdam, so we could always use some extra hands to help us out. For almost 50 years we have been offering a volunteer program, in which young Christians grow as a person and in their faith and learn how to share God’s love with people from all over the world in a very respectful way. Our ministry is often considered as a perfect place to fulfil a mission trip abroad.
Our summer volunteer program - Our Goal
“Lots of free time” is probably not how the volunteers in our summer volunteer program would describe their Shelter time. Summers in Amsterdam are very vibrant: it is warm, sunny, people spend as much as they can outside and the city is at its prettiest. It is therefore the city’s high season, which means the city attracts most visitors of the year during the summer months. So during summer most of the time the hostels are full. As it is our purpose to share Christ and His love with the guests who stay at our hostel, there are plenty of opportunities to reach out to guests.
Our summer volunteer program – How It Works
As a summer volunteer you will be working in the hostels café most of the time: preparing food, serving guests, and being a great host by creating a welcoming atmosphere. Connecting with guests is very important. If they get a warm welcome or had a nice talk with a volunteer, they will be much more open to join activities and share what is on their hearts. Through daily conversations, “bridges” to the Gospel often come up naturally and guests often appear to be open to exchange ideas, to philosophize about God, Jesus and the Bible. We want them to experience the Shelter as a safe place, and it is our deepest desire that they find God, the ultimate shelter for life. If you want to grow in sharing the gospel and identifying ministry opportunities, we might be the perfect place for you.
No lazy volunteer mission trips
Living and working in the Shelter community can be quite intense. So you probably won't join on our volunteer mission trips to relax and get rested. Every day is different. But you will definitely have more than enough time to hang out with other volunteers, explore Amsterdam or other places, practice sports, make music, etc. But more importantly grow in your relationship with God.
