The early afternoon sun glistens off the water as I walk 20 hostel guests around Amsterdam; telling the amusing history of the bridge we stand on over the Amstel river. It is Saturday and I am leading a City Walk: a perfect opportunity for sharing Jesus.
For me, the most worthwhile part of city walks is getting to share Christ through connections made, and following conversations. In the hour and a half that I get to spend looping around the city; our guests have become more like a group of friends. While we walk, I tell the stories of the city and they in turn share bits of their own stories.
Leading city tours has been one of the best parts of working at Shelter City. I love getting to share the rich, inspiring, heart-wrenching, and sometimes downright funny stories of Amsterdam. It is so fulfilling to see guests look at the city with new wonder and appreciation for all it holds. It provides an opportunity to connect with guests who aren’t interested in coming to overtly Christian events; such as our nightly Bible discussions. Through this relationship, I am able to share about who Jesus is and why I am serving God here at the hostel.
