Ministry Training Program
Do you feel called to become a missionary? Or are you looking for ways to grow in sharing God's love with others? Then searching for missionary training school, ministry or discipleship training courses is the right thing to do! So if you are interested, we would like to tell you more about what we offer in the Ministry Training Program in our ministry in Amsterdam.
About our ministry and our missionary work
In short about our ministry: we have two Christian hostels in Amsterdam, where we share God's love and the gospel of Jesus Christ with 40.000 travelers a year. We don't do this in a pushy way. On the contrary, in everything we do we want to create a safe, loving and warm atmosphere. We want our guests to experience the hostels as a home away from home. Through sincere interactions with them, we hope that guests feel free to open up about the things that matter in their lifes. And, when they allow us, we share from our hearts what matters to us at last. It is very practical volunteer work combined with a pure form of evangelism. And we love it.
What to expect from our ministry courses
For this purpose you probably don't necessarily need discipleship training courses or a ministry training program. But what we have seen in the past 50 years is that ministry courses can be very helpful to grow in this area. Because how do you deal with difficult questions ? How to connect with travelers who mainly came to Amsterdam because of the Red Light District? Or how to share thoughts with guests from other religious backgrounds, like moslims or buddhists? We want to equip and prepare our volunteers for a life of ministry and service. The tools we offer them are applicable in any workplace, either in mission fields as in a business setting. The Shelter desires to be a place where volunteers can grow in ministry, but most of all in their personal relationship with God. That is why we started the Ministry Training Program (MTP) in 2003.
Ministry Training Program: weekly training sessions
In weekly sessions, called MTP, you will learn more about yourself, about God, about evangelism and serving in the hostel. Once or twice a week all volunteers receive training in topics both spiritual and practical. The sessions are based upon the ministry context of the hostel. Through working in the hostels you learn how to put the MTP-lessons into practice.
The first two months are more practical: you will learn how to work professionally at a hostel and how to lead evangelism activities. After covering the basics, you will dive deeper into topics on faith, core matters of the gospel, as well as how to live in a multi-cultural community. The various courses are taught by teachers with different areas of ministry experience (coming from Youth with a Mission, L’Abri, and other organizations) and some with theological degrees.
Ministry courses: tools for evangelism
People who join our team come from different backgrounds. Some have experience in evangelism and ministry, and for others it is quite new. The Ministry Training Program (MTP) will provide you with the necessary tools to evangelism in the Shelter ministry and beyond. It is important for us that our volunteers have a desire to learn and grow in this area.
