Practice Christian hospitality

Since the Shelter is a hostel, hospitality is it’s ‘core business’. The way we offer hospitality in our hostels is inspired by Gods hospitality. And since the Shelter is run by Christians, we have an even deeper and stronger motivation for hospitality: we find hospitality at the core of the heart of the God we believe in. Daily we live out of His hospitality.

The deepest truth is that God is the actual host at the Shelter. All we do at the Shelter serves to meet God’s desire for all people to truly find their home in Him.

Meaningful conversations

The foundation of our ministry is Christian hospitality. We create an atmosphere of love and acceptance, which opens up a space for us to share the love of Jesus Christ. We believe that practical service, given with kindness and joy, is the starting point of meaningful connections with our guests. It how we demonstrate Christ’s love to those who do not know him.

Safe atmosphere to talk about spiritual matters

Through personal conversations and evangelism activities, we like to create a safe atmosphere. We want guests to feel free to talk about spiritual matters with us. In conversations about everyday things we try to make a bridge to the Gospel, without being forceful to guests or preaching to them. .

Practical service by Christians from all over the world

Our Shelter hostels are run by Christian volunteers from all over the world. Short term volunteers (1 – 3 months) will work mainly in the café and kitchen. They prepare food, serve the guests and are great hosts by creating a welcoming atmosphere. Long term volunteers (4 – 12 months) can broaden their experience and responsibilities, for example by training as a receptionist or as a supervisor in our cleaning program. All volunteers could also lead different evangelism activities.

Our volunteer staff members work about five and a half hours a day: at reception, in the café or as cleaner supervisor. The café is where light meals, drinks, and snacks are prepared and served. It is also a place where the staff help to promote a clean and comfortable atmosphere. During daily shifts there are many opportunities to reach out and engage in conversation with guests.

We have a TRIPLE mission!

So our mission is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ in a context of hospitality among travelers in our two Christian hostels in Amsterdam. And to help Christians between 18 and 30 years old grow and mature in their faith.

But there is a third cool fact about the hostel! Since we are part of the non profit organization Tot Heil des Volks, the profit that is generated by the hostels supports local charities. These local charities help people in need, like homeless people, poor children, drug addicts, and women who are trapped in prostitution.
