Living in a Christian community

Our ministry is not only focused on reaching out to travelers that are staying in our hostels. With our Christian ministry we want to equip and prepare you for a life of ministry and service. That you can have the chance to grow and discover your unique gifts.

As a volunteer at the Shelter, you are given the luxury of not having to rent a room in the city. You will be living in our Christian community with the rest of our volunteers. The community house is in the beautiful Jordaan area of Amsterdam, just a five to ten minute bike ride to the Shelter hostels.

Our Shelter youth hostel ministry is a great way to experience living in a Christian community. Besides providing a place to rest, the community house is also a place to enjoy fellowship with one another. You are not serving alone: you are part of a supportive community. To make the most out of your mission opportunity, you will have a prayer mentor and prayer buddy to talk with while you are serving in the Netherlands. Also you will meet weekly with your small group to have breakfast together, worship, pray, share, and grow together in your faith.

The community house

There is a caring married couple who takes care of the Christian community and all the volunteers who live there. They pay attention to the spiritual and personal life of each volunteer along with the practical aspects of maintaining the house. They welcome each new team member and create a comfortable home-like atmosphere. The Shelter community house provides bedrooms to accommodate two or three persons per room, a big kitchen and dining room, living room, library, internet, and other facilities.

Benefits of living in a Christian community

  • You will experience living in a community with people from various cultures, churches and backgrounds. A big diversity, but a unity that comes in Christ.
  • Living in a community is a great place to develop your social skills, to mature as a person in your walk with God and to grow as Christians together.
  • You will participate in small group meetings and monthly events where most of the staff comes together for a time of prayer and worship.
  • Spiritual growth individually within the community and the unity of the community helps to put faith into practice. The sense of community will overflow into the hostels to provide open means of sharing Christ with the guests.
