How to apply as a volunteer?

Are you looking for a chance to live, work and share the Gospel in a dynamic international community in Amsterdam? Read here about how you can apply! Please note that the application process depends on your passport: if you come from a non EU country then the application process is more lengthy. You will need to apply for a visa to work at the Shelter. Please follow the steps below to check if you can apply as a volunteer!

Step 1 - General requirements

In order to join our team, we are looking for people in the age of 18 to 30 that:

Profile Christian Volunteer Opportunities

If you fit the mentioned requirements, please continue to step 2.

Step 2 - Visa needed?

The length of your volunteering time depends on the country you come from (or where you have a passport from). Discover by answering the following questions if you need a visa or working holiday permit and which application procedure fits to your country and situation.

Do you have a passport from one of the EU-countries or Switzerland? (with the exception of Croatia)

Step 3 - Length of your stay and starting dates

Christian volunteer opportunities vary from one month to one year. Ideally, we would like people to serve as Christian volunteers for 3 months or longer. We also have a few Christian volunteer opportunities for only 2 months. Short term mission volunteers (1 – 3 months) work mainly in the café: preparing food, serving guests and being a great host by creating a welcoming atmosphere. There are many opportunities to share Christ by connecting with the guests in the café and at our activities.

If you would like to dive deeper into topics on faith and core matters of the gospel, you should consider joining our ministry for 4 - 12 months. We often see that volunteers want to extend their stay after a few months of serving. If you have the time, please consider staying longer on forehand… You won’t regret!

You can find the starting and ending dates here.

Step 4 - Costs

During your Christian volunteer opportunity at the Shelter, we will provide you with:

  • Accommodation (free of charge)
  • Ministry Training Program (free of charge)
  • If applicable: Payment of Fee required for the Residence permit

You will have to provide and pay for:

  • €60 for each month of your term
  • Travel to Amsterdam and back
  • Medical insurance
  • Extra spending money

To take part in our Christian volunteer opportunities, you must have medical insurance. This needs to cover medical (emergency) costs of hospitals, doctors, dentist, etc in the Netherlands. You will need to provide this.

Step 5 - Get your church involved!

We encourage you to do this mission together with your home church. It is powerful when your church is involved and can support you financially and in prayer. This is not a requirement and not all of our staff members are sent out from a church. However, we do require a reference from someone who plays a leadership role in your Christian life.
